Mom and More this May…

This month we are celebrating MOM and the commencement of the commercial Salmon Season! We are excited about the Mother’s Day Brunch Menu Chef Lite has created and some delectable Salmon Specials he will dish up this Spring and Summer. Fun Fact: Ginger

What is it? Ginger or ginger root is commonly known as a delicacy, it produces a hot, fragrant spice. Not only is ginger wonderful in food and drinks it also can be used as a fragrance, added to cosmetics and soaps. Ginger also can be used for medicinal purposes. It can be used fresh, dried and powdered, or as a juice or oil.

At Johnny’s you will find ginger in our Crab and Shrimp Stuffed Tempura Avocado served with a side of spicy ginger aioli. We also carry ginger beer. It is refreshing when mixed with Tito’s Gluten Free Vodka accompanied by a fresh squeeze of lemon.

Medicinally Ginger has aided in treating various types of “stomach problems,” including motion sickness, morning sickness, colic, upset stomach and nausea caused by cancer treatment. It is also great for pain relief from arthritis or muscle soreness. Ginger is also sometimes used for chest pain and low back pain.


Featured Recipe: Fresh Mint & Ginger Lemonade

1/2 cup (packed) chopped fresh mint leaves
1/3 cup chopped fresh ginger
1/3 cup honey
2 cups boiling water
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 cups (about) cold water

Combine chopped mint, ginger, and honey in medium bowl. Add boiling water. Let steep 30 minutes. Strain into 4-cup glass measuring cup, pressing on solids to extract liquid. Add lemon juice and enough cold water to measure 4 cups total. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.) Fill glasses with ice cubes. Add lemonade. Garnish with mint leaves and lemon slices and serve.

Salmon Season Begins… king salmon

226Commercial salmon season began May 1, which will bring fresh wild king salmon right off the boats of the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor and onto our Fresh Catch Fish Selections Board as often as we can. According to fishery biologists with the California Fish and Game Commission and the Pacific Fishery Management Council, this season is expected to be a success! We look forward to dishing up some of our rich local fare!

Did you know? The flesh of the salmon is highly valued for its dietary nutritional content, which includes high levels of important omega-3 fatty acids.

Creative Culinary Capers – Thursdays
Come try the creations inspired by Chef Evan’s Boys and Girls Club of Live Oak cooking class inspirations.

Happy Hour Monday – Thursday 3-6
Happy Hour is Monday – Thursday from 3-6 and Friday’s will be 3-5PM beginning May 30th when we move to our new summer hours. There are still tasty $3-$6 creations.
